Using Kali
An exercise in using an interactive 2D Euclidean symmetry pattern editor.

MATERIALS:
- 2 computers (Windows or Macintosh)
- Kali software
- Printer (preferably color)
DIRECTIONS:
- In each group, students should work in pairs.
- Open the program 'Kali'.
- Go to OPTIONS and select BACKGROUND. There is a slider below the color wheel. Slide it all the way to the right. Select OK. This will make the background white, which will improve the printed product.
- Close the wallpaper palette and open the rosette palette.
- Select one of the symmetry groups in the rosette palette by single-clicking on it.
- To make your symmetrical design, single-click on the screen to start drawing, and double-click to stop.
- To erase, just select another symmetry group in the rosette palette.
- Selecting different colors will add variety to your drawing.
- When your drawing is complete, go to FILE and select PRINT. When the window appears, press return.
PRODUCT:
Each student should have made a printed symmetrical drawing.
The Scribe checks off the station on the recording sheet.
CLEAN-UP:
- Quit the program so that the computer will be ready for the next group of students.
- Place all drawings in the group folder.
